What Makes Studio Arts Unique?
Most people I know have grown up with a similar view of learning music.  A child is
enrolled in a music instruction program where the student & teacher sit in a room for a
lesson, and the teacher sends home some practice exercises until the next lesson takes
place.  What happens next varies from family to family...  but for the majority of families,
the child begins rebelling against the practicing... then the child refuses to practice... and
mom and dad come to the realization they are wasting money on unwanted instruction...
and the music lessons end.

I grew up with two styles of learning music... the traditional way of learning (studying
accordion for eight years and participating in the local rotary festivals) and also the
experiences of growing up playing music together with my brother & two sisters... I
learned how to 'jam', and how to play by ear.  Both methods are extremely important to
make music a 'life long' passion.  Studio Arts is dedicated to help our participants develop
that 'life long passion'.

To assist me, I would like to make an analogy with hockey… (hockey was a huge passion
for me growing up)...

When parents enroll their son / daughter in hockey, the kids get to participate in the
games immediately.  Show up on Saturday, put the equipment on & away we go!  The
kids are in the game.  It is the coaches job to create the environments on the ice where
the kids will have fun.  If the kids are not having fun...  the coach may have something to
do with it.

As kids continue to play hockey, they improve.  They become better skaters & stick
handlers…  just by being in the game.  If a child really enjoys hockey, and develops a
passion for the game, then parents may choose to enroll their child in extra programs like
Power Skating or Skills... more specialized instruction.

Let me apply this to music.

At Studio Arts, we create the opportunities for kids to 'play in the game'.  We let the kids
play on all the instruments to help them discover what instruments they are being drawn
to.  We help them learn to play instruments & sing... and we create the  opportunities for
kids to be on stage with professional sound & lights.  As kids develop 'passions' for
various areas of music, it is a great time for parents to invest in specialized instruction...
The kids will 'want' to be at lessons & practice, moms and dads won't be wasting money...
and teachers will be working with inspired kids.

We believe there are many benefits to experiencing & learning to be in front of people.
The biggest benefit is building confidence and self-esteem.  Kids have to stand before
their classes & give speeches and present projects.  As teenagers they still have to
present themselves in school situations, and for many... they will experience a job
interview!  The benefits of learning to be before people is a life-long gift!!!

To date... the music mindset has been the opposite of hockey.  Imagine kids taking power
skating for 10 years dreaming of playing in a hockey game... and the game never comes
because the child looses interest and quits.

In music, kids dream of playing in bands and being in front of audiences, but the kids are
only experiencing music in a small studio with one adult teacher... and at home practicing
by themselves.  Most kids quit music before they ever get an opportunity to have a
positive experience on stage before an audience.

At Studio Arts... we say there is more!!!  We are stepping outside the box of traditional
thinking.

We offer the game! We offer the opportunities for kids to learn instruments, play with
other kids… to get on stage with microphones and instruments… with sound & lights…
and play, sing, talk, move, act, joke around... live the dream!  Whether they are absolute
beginners or advanced players… We put the kids in the game.

In a one hour session... 15 - 20 minutes will be focused on skill development, and the
remaining time will be helping kids develop their skills with a group of kids their own age
& ability...  As a group they become a band and develop songs and dynamic presence for
performance.... and there will be lots of performances!

When kids develop a real passion for an instrument... private lessons are wonderful!
Studio Arts and private teachers can work very well together.  We have many students
who are involved in Studio Arts Bands and their individual instructors help teach solos &
techniques that speed up the learning process.

Thanks for taking the time to read where my musical journey has lead me.  I hope that
Studio Arts can be a place where your children can develop music as a life long passion!
